Audio Tour - WM Keck Museum

http://www.unr.edu/art/digital_media/tour/unr/005_Kostecki.mp3 <-- Link to mp3 of audio tour. - For this project I chose to do a tour of the WM Keck Mineral Museum on the UNR campus. Making an audio tour for a mineral museum was a unique challenge because of the objective nature of a scientific museum. Even though I think the museum is rather interesting, I wanted to give a sense of intrigue and maybe a bit of pizzazz to this space, and make it "smooth" and "cool." A film noir theme seemed to fit just right. There was enough material to use as clues of sort, but at the same time, I encountered the problem of being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff the museum has. I ended up cutting and re-recording many parts so that they would fit into a neat little tour. When it comes to the actual story of the tour, I did not intent for there to be a clear plot. I wanted it to be open ended, leaving enough to the imagination of the listeners, but I also did not want to take away from the exhibits themselves.

  1. This audio tour was one of my favorites and you created a really fun character--and in a space that I didn't even knew existed! It was emotive and descriptive, which is really crucial when we're only listening to dialogue. It would actually make a good little movie haha.

    Thanks!!

  2. this is an inventive concept, sort of like the murder mystery dinners, but a tour.

  3. This was fun piece, and the entire museum was incorporated into the tour very well. When you first told us the idea, I thought we would be staring at a rock in a case for 6 min; but the flow through the museum was smooth.Great job.

  4. Great job working with another outside person in getting this together - and getting the museum to stay open late, I know that can be challenging. The music you used really stood out and your language used during the piece fit well. I would like to have seen one or two more facts about the museum or something though.

  5. Your film noir audio style was unexpectedly humorous at times - and I think that added to the piece. When people think of a rock museum, most do not attribute "fun" in that experience. You added a new kind of way to see the museum. The open ended finale made you whole piece sink in effectively.

  7. What I appreciated the most about your work was the atmosphere you created in correlation to the museum. The two blended seamlessly together and listening to the work now, the feel of the audio has led me to envision the space as if it were a black and white film. Additionally, one of the components of your work that really stood out was how you brought the viewer through the space. The movement required from one location to the next was substantial and kept the viewers engaged physically through the space, as well as prevented any sense of clumping.

  8. The humor, sarcasm, and allusions were all fantastic in this piece! The jokes about the museum and the exhibits were actually surprisingly funny, the sarcasm about somebody trying to capture you was well delivered, and the allusion to film noire was just perfect with the music, the rain, and the dialogue! Great script and delivery.

  12. Your audio made me feel like I was in some sort of black and white movie wearing a suit and investigating the museum. It was a lot of fun imagining myself in that sort of setting. Your use of sound and voice narration really set the mood for you piece. The ending was really cool and I kinda wish I knew what happened to the character. Nice job!

  13. This tour was one of my favorites, as I had never been to the Rock Museum before. The story was cheesy at times, but not too much, just enough to make me laugh. It was very old western feeling to me, and my favorite part was pushing the button at the end. The glowing rocks are amaaaazing. Great use of the audio to make us interact with the Musuem.

  14. I am a huge fan of mystery and film noir so this was definitely one of my favorite tours. I have never been to the museum part of the library so it was a new experience for me when we were walking around and looking at the different pieces. I also enjoyed the twist at the end and the tone the background music and the narrator's voice added to the mood of the entire thing. Loved it!

  15. This project was sick. You definitely selected the best transition noises, effects and even tone of your voice to match the old mystery scenario.

  16. Man, I really really liked your piece. The location, to the music, sound effects, narration and style of writing all fit together so well. It was a perfect execusion of a film noir detective story with some great comedic timing. I've never been in that building before and I absolutely love that this was the first way I ever experienced it. To me it will always be a stormy night with a mystery to solve in there. Such an excellent job.
